To avoid undesirable noise, direct boxes (DI Box) take an unbalanced, high-impedance signal and convert it to a balanced, low-impedance signal. This allows instruments directly connect to microphone preamplifiers, and send signals over extended cable runs or into the mixing console in the studio. The benefit of Direct Box is it reduces noise to produce a cleaner sound.
